If you need a roofing company in Austin, Austin Roofs does two things. We publish the information roofers usually keep to themselves: a free hail map, the Texas insurance-claim rules, real cost ranges, and the common claims that are wrong for Texas. And when you ask for an estimate, we pass your request to one roofing contractor we checked against a published standard.
Austin Roofs is a referral service, not a roofing contractor. Your inspection and estimate come from our partner roofer, an independent contractor. Our partner roofer is checked against the standard on this page before we send a single request. The partner roofer pays us a referral fee on completed jobs. You never pay us, and the fee doesn’t change your price.

Why Austin roofs wear out early
Three things shorten a roof here.
Hail. National Weather Service storm reports for the three counties from 2014 through 2026 total 790 hail reports across 145 storm days. April (232 reports) and May (211) are the peak. September (125) is a second season most people forget. The Austin Hail Map lets you check whether a storm actually crossed your street.
Heat. Normal highs reach 90°F by May 26 and stay there until September 23 (NWS Austin/San Antonio climate summary). Months of attic heat cook the oils out of asphalt shingles. A shingle sold as “30-year” is often replaced in Austin at 12 to 18 years. [VERIFY]
Rain in bursts. May, October and June are the wettest months (NWS). Water finds the weak flashing and lifted shingles that hail and heat left behind.
How this works
- You send a request. Address, what you have noticed, and whether a storm is involved. Request an estimate.
- We pass it to our partner roofer. One contractor, not a list of five who bid for your phone number.
- The partner inspects and quotes in writing. Every slope walked, photos dated, a line-item scope and price. No verbal numbers.
- You decide. No obligation. The inspection report is yours, and you are free to take it to any other roofer.
Full details, including the vetting checklist and how to opt out of contact, are on the how it works page.
What it costs
Nothing to use this site, and nothing for the referral. The partner roofer quotes in writing after an inspection. For planning, the range Google’s own AI Overview shows for an Austin full replacement is about $8,000 to $30,000 and up, depending on size, pitch, material, decking repairs and access. That is a typical Austin range, not a price list. Repairs cost far less; see roof repair.
What you will never see here
- A deductible deal. Texas Business & Commerce Code §27.02 makes it a Class B misdemeanor for a contractor to pay, waive, absorb or rebate your insurance deductible. Our partner standard requires the roofer to follow that law. Anyone offering a “free roof” in Texas is describing a crime.
- “We’ll handle your claim.” Texas Insurance Code §4102.163 bars a contractor from acting as a public adjuster on a property it works on. The partner documents damage, meets the adjuster at your request, and gives you a written scope. Nobody on this site negotiates your claim.
- The word “licensed.” Texas has no state roofing license. A 2025 bill to create one (HB 3344) died in committee. When a roofer says “licensed” in Texas, ask what they mean.
- Reviews we did not earn. There are none yet. When there are real ones, they will be real.
FAQ
Will insurance cover a 20 year old roof in Texas?
Sometimes, but often at actual cash value instead of replacement cost. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) notes that some insurers move older roofs to actual cash value at renewal, and that a policy will not pay for a new roof just because it is old. Damage from a covered storm is still a claim at any age. What changes is how much depreciation comes off the check.
Is $30,000 too much for a roof?
Not necessarily in Austin. Google’s AI Overview puts Austin full replacements at roughly $8,000 to $30,000 and up. A steep, cut-up roof with rotten decking, two layers to tear off and a premium shingle can reach the top of that range. A simple one-story ranch should not. Compare written scopes line by line, not totals.
How long does a roof last in Texas?
Less than the shingle wrapper says. Austin heat and hail usually retire an asphalt roof in 12 to 18 years, and insurers start treating a roof as old around 15. [VERIFY] Metal lasts longer. An inspection tells you where your roof actually is.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Austin?
Usually no. The City of Austin lists like-for-like roof covering replacement as exempt from a building permit, unless the home is in the Wildland-Urban Interface zone and 50 percent or more of the roof is being replaced. Decking repairs up to 128 square feet are also exempt. Round Rock does not require a re-roof permit. Georgetown does. [VERIFY] Other cities vary.
Am I allowed to replace my own roof?
In Texas, yes. There is no roofing license, so nothing stops a homeowner from doing the work. Inside Austin, a homeowner acting as their own contractor has to register with the city before a permit is issued, when a permit is needed. [VERIFY] The practical risks are falls, voided shingle warranties from installation errors, and an insurer that later questions the workmanship.
How many roofing quotes should I get?
If you are paying cash, two or three written scopes you can compare line for line. If an insurance claim is paying, the insurer’s scope sets the price, so more quotes mostly buy more sales pitches. Compare scope, materials and contract terms instead. Our referral gets you one written scope from a checked contractor; you are free to get others.
